Tracking my Media Usage

Analyzing my Media Usage

  1. I think my media usage is extremely sporadic. I think I spend way too much time on social media but I also think my social media usage has an influence on my lack of constant texting. My use of the computer is pretty much limited to my homework because we can do so much on our phones. I don’t typically use my tablet for much except homework and Netflix and occasionally social media, when my phone is charging. I think the amount of time I use listening to music is extremely low. I think being in DC has reduced my use of radio and I have never really been one to listen to music from a music player. I definitely am disappointed in my use of print. I think because I do so much reading on my tablet that I’ve lost touch with printed work but I definitely want to improve that.
  1. Television is my favorite medium. My television preferences really depend on my mood. If I am in the mood to “binge watch” on Netflix I’d want to do that alone. But watching new movies from my computer or the newest episode of a popular show is always more enjoyable with friends in my opinion.
  1. I definitely get information out of media. On social media I can find out almost anything that is going on in the world and can get various points of view and find links to reliable articles that can confirm or deny what I have been told by other social media users. Entertainment is also a major benefit to media usage as well. I can be entertained through any type of medium from social media to gaming, books, television and music. I think television gives me a break and escape and break from everything. I usually don’t have to interact with others and if I do it is only with people I really and truly enjoy.
  1. I chose to give up Television because I thought it would be something I felt reliance on. The hardest part about this was definitely the lack of Netflix. I usually play Netflix when I do homework as background noise or when I’m bored and trying to stay off social media. Instead of increasing my use of social media or texting I decided to go out and have more fun with my friends. I went shopping during that day with some friends and then went to explore DC night that evening. I think stepping away from my iPad’s Netflix app was hard but beneficial.
  1. Giving up TV was actually a lot easier than I initially thought it would be. I thought it would be impossible but as long as I did not dwell on its absence I honestly didn’t notice it. I don’t think the days that I gave up TV necessarily mattered much, usually when I’m out I will put TV away but having to say no I won’t watch Netflix tonight was a test of self-control. I think giving up Television actually improved my interpersonal relationships and communication. Instead of sitting in our dorms watching Netflix we went out and got fresh air and explored the wonderful city we attend college in. I also think that by tracking my media usage I can see that I should definitely get more into the print medium. It was shocking how little time I used reading from a paper book or magazine.
